From its earlier form of a Missionary Group Tradition, Kuchipudi has evolved into being a highly entertaining and technically complex, sophisticated and stylized solo dance form, which enjoys the added artistic advantage of a large space for histrionic improvisations. In its journey from dance drama to solo format, Kuchipudi dance altered course from being addressed to a largely rural audience to a mainly urban one.

‘The Dance of the Enchantress’, this genre was invented in medieval
times for the delectation of courtly male connoisseurs of Kathakali. The
legendary poet of the Malabar, Vallathol, was pivotal iii rescuing this
art from dereliction. This slow, seductive form is usually danced to
langourous tunes taken from the old Kerala tradition of Sopana
Sangeetam with distinct lyrics.
