Kanak and Mani are childhood friends. Although, fate brings them apart when they get married, they continue to nurture their affiliation from a distance. Their fondness for each other develops into an invincible bond, further sealed by their agreeing to get their children married one day. Kanak gives birth to Chandrika (Chando) in Banaras and Mani to Jalad in Mumbai.. Chando grows up in the company of her cousin sister Chapla whose bold and effervescent character is a contrast to Chando's, simple and shy person. Chando dreams of marrying Jalad but Jalad is unaware of his mother's promise to her best friend. When Kanak falls gravely ill, Mani rushes to her best friend's side along with Jalad. Kanak breathes her last in Mani's arms, extracting yet another promise asking Mani to take Chando with her, so she no longer has to endure the scorn and wrath of her Sister-in-Law Leela (Chapla's mother). Chando is deeply saddened by the circumstances that threaten to cut her ties with her family and home. Chapla assures Chando that distance will only strengthen their bond. Chando moves to Mumbai and gradually settles in her new surroundings. She helps Mani with household / business duties and takes personal care of Jalad's needs, bringing harmony in his otherwise chaotic and undisciplined life. Chando meets Dinesh, (Jalad's best friend) who is suave, sensible, introvert and polished compared to Jalad who is pampered by his mother is mischievous, reckless and playful. Dinesh falls in love with Chando but never expresses his feelings. Mani is very pleased that she will soon be fulfilling her promise to Kanak, by getting Jalad and Chando married. When Chapla arrives in Mumbai to attend her sister's engagement with Jalad, circumstances cause both Jalad and her to fall in love. Chando discovers this and decides to sacrifice her own love in order to assure her sister's happiness. Mani is crestfallen when Chando requests her to get Chapla and Jalad married-shocked by destiny's cruel intervention. Chando accepts her fate in belief that even grief must be cherished if it is bestowed by God. Chapla and Jalad are married, but marital bliss evades their relationship. Jalad continues to seek Chando's advice and support through difficult family situations, much to Chapla's resentment. Her erroneous perceptions are put to rest when she falls seriously ill, diagnosed with cancer and the operation renders her incapable of bearing children. Chando diligently nurses her back to health. Her sincerity and devotion bring Chapla back to her senses. Chapla starts feeling guilty about snatching Jalad from Chando. On the other hand Chando and Dinesh have become close friends since Dinesh has been a pillar of strength and support. A slow fired, attraction starts to develop between the two. However, before Chando can even guage her feelings for Dinesh, Chapla requests her to marry Jalad in order to provide the family with an heir and fulfill Mani's long standing promise. Chando is stunned by Chapla's request endorsed by Mani. Will Chando marry Jalad? Will Jalad agree to marry Chando? Will Dinesh remain heartbroken yet again? What does destiny have in store for Jalad, Chapla, Chandrika and Dinesh? The resolution of this unique love quadrilateral comes in terms of portrayal of rare emotional sensitivity hitherto ever seen in teleserials.
